004 LONG HOUSE / TALL HOUSE
Info
Year: 2020 - 2026
Location: Sea Ranch, California
Type: Single Family House
Design Team: Hüma Sahin, Adrian Harrison, Steve Harrison
THREE PITCHED ROOFS IN DIALOGUE: Situated along the Northern California coast, Sea Ranch is known for its strong design principles derived from observations of the ecological systems it is situated in. The Long House and the Tall House are together a single family home that emphasize the space between the buildings as much as the buildings themselves. So doing, they bring living into contact with the prairie, coastal forest, and ocean that lie adjacent. It is derived from the considerations of sequence, scale, and the traditional barn form.

041 NO BACKSTAGE
Info
Year: 2026
Location: The Lab, San Francisco, California
Type: Performance Venue
Design Team: Hüma Sahin, Adrian Harrison, Milos Mladenovic
In December of 2024 we attended 40 Years of The Lab, a celebratory night featuring a performance by the inimitable Pamela Z. That evening we met Andrew Smith, who had just recently inaugurated the renovation of tThe Lab kicking it off with Evicshen’s performative pick-axing of a partition wall between The Lab’s current space and its adjoining future expansion. We were struck that night by the dynamism of the venue, where a hole formed in the wall during one performance could become a feature for another to riff off of. At The Lab there are no boundaries for performances, no boundaries between on-stage and off-stage, performer and audience, performance, and life. No Backstage.
Inverting typical hierarchies, the intervention exposes those Back-of-House areas to the Front-of-House, embodying qualities of transparency and blurred thresholds present in The Lab’s ethos. The intervention rings the operational zone with a semi-translucent storage and display area that will accumulate detritus from the many chapters of The Lab’s performances over time, turning them into a spectacle in the background and reinforcing the interplay between performers and audience.

012 DIALOGUE / DIAEIKON
Info
Year: April 2022
Location: Kirkland Gallery, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Type: Exhibition
Joint exhibition of Hüma Sahin, Adrian Harrison, Inés Benítez and Nuria Benítez
Ours is a world of increasing mediation, with images, especially digital, becoming a ubiquitous component of relationality. Yet this type of relationality (often one-to-many, rather than one-to-one or few-to-few) has seen a correspondent increase in feelings of isolation and alienation. Dia-Eikon proposes co-opting the form of digital image exchange for a more intimate type of exchange - a form of discourse that eschews the finished and final in favor of the sketchy and discursive. It is a series of three ‘Dia-Logue / Dia-Eikon’ (image exchanges) totaling over 500 sketches exchanged nightly between participants, and two accompanying crafted works (that were the result of the thinking within the dialogues). They were displayed in Kirkland Gallery in April 2022, during which the audience was invited to participate in the atmosphere of dialogue through sketches of their own.
